STAGE 2: 21-40 years
For the next 20 years the hardwoods will maintain their dominance in the canopy, growing in height more than diameter. Thinning can be considered here, depending on the goals of the landowner. If a pure hardwood forest is desired, most pines can be removed in this stage. Even though some pines may be left, they will be in the minority. New recreational opportunities become available as the forest reaches this stage, such as hiking, camping, and hunting.
