PC Installation:
1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM Drive.
2. Wait for the installation screen to appear.
3. Progress through the installation screens by clicking next (choose the default options).
4. The program may ask you to install Quicktime and Acrobat. Progress through those installation screens as well.
5. When the installation is complete, reboot your machine.
6. Double-click the icon on your desktop labeled with the title of the MVP course you installed.

If you do not have permission to load software on your machine, you may receive an authorization error (especially with Windows NT users). Contact your technical administrator to load the program for you.

Note: You must have Quicktime to use this program. If your machine does not have those programs, a script error will occur, or the video/audio will not play. Consult the troubleshooting guide below for information about installing these programs.

Quicktime 7 Compatibility Issues - Please click here for more information about QuickTime 7 and ITM products.

Note: Some computers are not set to automatically play, or they are configured in a way that does not allow this "auto run" feature for this program to initiate. If you have not previously installed the CD-ROM and nothing happens when you insert the disc (after a minute or so) double click "My Computer." Then right click on the CD-ROM icon with the MVP title. Click "explore." Double click on "install.exe" to run the installation.

MAC Installation:
1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM Drive.
2. Wait for the installation screen to appear. (If the installation process does not begin automatically, double click the file called "installer" found on the CD-ROM to begin.)
3. Progress through the installation screens by clicking next (choose the default options).
4. If the program asks you to install Quicktime and Acrobat, progress through those installation screens as well.
5. When the installation is complete, reboot your machine.
6. Double-click the icon on your desktop labeled with the title of the MVP course you installed.

Note: You must have Quicktime to use this program. If your machine does not have those programs, a script error will occur, or the video/audio will not play. Consult the troubleshooting guide below for information about installing these programs.

CAUTION: (prior to 2005 versions only) It is easy to accidentally open two versions of the Effective Classroom Management and the Learning to Read program. For instance, if you insert the disc into the drive and then double click the desktop icon, not waiting for the program to automatically open, two programs will open. The video and audio will not play well. You will hear music in the seminars. Exit the first copy of the program by pressing the ‘Esc’ key on the upper left-hand corner of your keyboard, and you will find another one open to use. The Reading to Learn program does not open automatically after installation when you insert the disc. To begin this program, double click on the Reading to Learn icon on your desktop.

Update Feature:
You may be asked to update your Effective Classroom Management, Learning to Read or Reading To Learn CD-ROM to provide you with revised files. PC: From the Start menu, choose "Update disc." You must be connected to the Internet. Follow the instructions. MAC: (prior to 2005 versions only the Reading to Learn CD-ROM is updatable on the MAC platform.) Choose the file called "updater" from the CD-ROM drive icon. You must be connected to the Internet. Follow the instructions that appear.

You must update on each machine on which you play the CD-ROM, since the update process copies the files from the Internet to your hard drive.

When Problems Occur:
Note: It is highly unlikely that the CD-ROM itself will not function if properly installed. The CD-ROMs are professionally replicated using a glass mastering process. The process includes a quality assurance system, which results in virtually error-free, shrink-wrapped compact discs, similar to audio CDs. However, the program must interact with the hardware (your computer) and the user. After installation, problems encountered usually fall into three categories:

  • Video not playing (or program not opening);
  • Viewing or printing files or documents; or
  • Sound or video quality.

Some users have also had trouble learning to use the reflection journal located on the CD-ROM. To work around this issue, participants should access the reflection journal from the website associated with each program:

Effective Classroom Management - www.itm-info.com/mvp2/ecmjrnl.htm
Learning to Read - www.itm-info.com/mvp2/ltrjrnl.htm
Reading to Learn - www.itm-info.com/mvp2/rtljrnl.htm

The following are examples of typical problems received by technical support and their resolution:

Video or program not playing:
Caller:
"My video doesn’t play." OR
"There is a black screen instead of video." OR
"When I try to open the program, I get a message that says ‘Script Error.’" OR
"I get an error message with #duration when a video is trying to play." OR
"A red X occurs in the video boxes, and the video/audio will not play."
Tech support response:
This is mostly a problem with PCs.  It is a video problem that is related to Quicktime from either an incomplete installation or having the wrong  version necessary for the video included on this product.

The easiest way to get a version of Quicktime that works is to go to ITM's website and download it: http://www.itm-info.com/services.htm.  If you are not online, you may do the following:

Install Quicktime by double clicking on "My Computer", right click on the CD-ROM labeled with the program title.  Click on "Explore."  (Macs just click on the CD-ROM icon with the program title.)  Click on the folder labeled "Quicktime." For products prior to 2005, double click on QT3, double click QuickTime30.exe to run the Quicktime 3.0 set up.  (Macs - in the Learning to Read CD-ROM, this will "unstuff" the file.  Then you must "unstuff" it again to your desktop. Then double click on the Quicktimeinstaller file.)  Choose the default settings already in place.  Note:  Windows 2000 may also require Quicktime 4.0.  If you have installed 3.0 and are still not able to view the opening video, click on the folder QT4 and double click QuickTimeInstaller.exe to run the Quicktime 4.0 setup. Windows XP may require Quicktime 5.0, which was released after the introduction of Effective Classroom Management, Learning to Read and Reading To Learn.  If you have a product published in 2005 or later, click on QuickTimeFullInstaller to run the QuickTime 6 setup. Or go to ITM's website to download the latest version: http://www.itm-info.com/services.htm.

The following represent technical issues for products published prior to 2005:

Caller:
"During the installation process, the Quicktime 4.0 setup keeps looping and asking me to install Quicktime."
Tech support response:
This happens most often with Windows 2000 ME. Exit the Quicktime 4.0 installer and follow the instructions above to install Quicktime 3.0 instead.

Caller:
"The program opens up for a second and then exits back out to the desktop before I can click on anything."
Tech support response:
Follow the procedure above to install Quicktime 3.0. Then install Quicktime 4.0 as well.

Caller:
"When installing Quicktime 3.0, I receive the error message: "Rundll. Errors loading C:\Windows\System\Quicktime.cpl."
Tech support response:
The QuickTime 3 installer uses a Temp folder in your boot drive for storing files needed during installation. Under Windows 95, this temp directory is located in the path "C:\Windows\Temp." Under Windows NT 4, this Temp directory is located in the path "C:\Temp." This Temp directory may contain files from previous installations that may interfere with the installation of QuickTime 3 (or other applications). Try to install a later version of Quicktime from the Apple site: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qt/. You may call ITM at 866-463-6486 to help you with this.

Printing or viewing files
Caller:
"When I try to review a file the box is simply black and missing the text or article."
Tech support response:
This results from an improper or incomplete installation of Acrobat Reader. Even if you have Acrobat Reader 3.0 already installed, the LTR and RTL CD-ROMs need Acrobat Reader version 4.0 or above in order to view the files and articles. From "My Computer", right click on the CD-ROM labeled Learning to Read or Reading To Learn. Click on "Explore." (Macs just click on the CD-ROM icon labeled "Learning to Read" or "Reading To Learn".) Double click on the folder labeled "Acrobat", and then double-click on rs405eng to run the Acrobat Reader 4.0 set up.

If you have Acrobat Exchange or the full version of Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer, and if you are not using it routinely, it should be uninstalled, as it interferes with Acrobat 4.0 Reader. This is an Acrobat issue and has nothing to do with the LTR or RTL CD-ROM. If you do not want to uninstall your full version of Adobe Acrobat, you can view the pdf files that are contained in the "Media" folder of the CD-ROM. These can be accessed as follows: From "My Computer", right click on the CD-ROM labeled Learning to Read or Reading To Learn. Click on "Explore." (Macs just click on the CD-ROM icon labeled Learning to Read or Reading To Learn.) Double click on the folder labeled "Media", and then double click on the folder labeled PDFs. Double click on any file to open in Adobe Acrobat and print.

Caller:
"The text in my reflection journal did not appear, or appeared as "gobbly gook."
Tech support response:
On some computers, your text will disappear after you hit the enter key to make a new paragraph. There is not currently a way around this. Use the online reflection journal choices listed above.

Caller:
"All my journal entries have disappeared. I had written a lot of responses in it and now they are gone!"
Tech support response:
The Reflection Journal is one document covering all of the questions for each seminar. You must save your journal text before exiting the program. When you start the program again, be sure to load the text back into the program (your files' default names are "untitled" for Effective Classroom Management, "journal.jrn" for Learning to Read and "journal" for Reading to Learn). If you forget to load the text you typed earlier and you type in your Reflection Journal during this session, rename the journal when you save it so you won't delete the journal file already saved. If you are using several machines, be sure to save your journal file to a floppy disc. When you print the journal, it will print all of the journal questions, and any answers that you have typed in. If you still have problems, access the online journal choices listed above.

The following represent technical issues that arise even with 2005 versions:

Caller:
"When I click on a tab or menu item, I get a browser screen that says action cancelled."
Tech support response:
You must be connected to the Internet to view the Internet links within the program. Occasionally, the server of a particular link will be temporarily down. If you are connected to the Internet and still receive that message, try again later. If you think the link is incorrect, please contact ITM at 1-866-463-6486.

Caller:
During the install I get a message that asks, "Where is F:\misc\test.pct"?

Tech support response:

Click cancel on that question screen. Then you will get a screen that says "install" above the title "QuickTime Movie Player." Click "install" (ignore the Acrobat icon next to it).Install QuickTime continuing through the QuickTime install screens. Close out the QuickTime folder upon completion of the install. Then continue the software install as normal.

Audio Problems
Caller:
"I either cannot hear the audio, or when I do, the sound is choppy or jumpy." OR
"The video freezes."
Tech support response:
Sound problems can have many causes but consider the following:

  • Make sure your speakers are plugged in, are correctly connected to your computer, are turned on and the volume is turned up. DOUBLE CLICK ON THE SPEAKER ICON on the bottom right-hand corner of your desktop. Make sure none of the mute boxes are checked, and make sure volume is turned up for all types of audio.
  • Make sure you only have one copy of the program running. If you click on the seminar and still hear music in the background, then you have opened more that one copy of the program. Exit out of all of the programs. Then double click the program title icon on your desktop – making sure you double click only once.
  • Close out other programs you are running, like Word or Outlook. This will free up your machine to better handle the CD-ROM contents.
  • You may need to install the contents of the disc onto your hard drive, instead of running the program from the CD-ROM drive. Uninstall the program by clicking on your Start menu to find the title of the program, and clicking on "Uninstall Disc. Then go through the install procedure again making sure to click on "Full Install" instead of "Typical Install." This will take a few moments to copy onto your hard drive.
  • Some sound/video cards are not adequate for this level of programming. You may need to access a computer with a better sound/audio card.
  • It is possible that the sound device your computer is using is not compatible with this program. Go to your START menu. Choose "Run" and type regedit. Click: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/interactive Training Media/Title of program. Double-click on the icon labeled "SoundDevice." Change the listing under "value data" from DirectSound to QT3Mix or MacroMix (see which one works better).
  • Try following these steps:
    1. In your Control Panel, open the Quicktime icon. If you don’t see the Quicktime icon, you may need to click on “Switch to Classic View.”

    2. In the Quicktime window, click on Video Settings from the drop down menu.

    3. Change your settings to Safe Mode (GDI Only).

    4. Try the disc again, and see if this has addressed the problem. If not, please contact ITM for further troubleshooting. You may need to download a newer version of Quicktime from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download.
