What is the mission of the Alabama Forestry Commission?

Established as a state agency in 1924, the mission of the Alabama Forestry Commission is three-fold:

  • to Protect the Forests from all harmful agents
  • to Service and Help Landowners to carry out responsible forest management on their property, using professional technical assistance so as to benefit themselves, their land, and society
  • to Educate the General Public about the value of our forests in ensuring both a health economy and environment

We do this in the most efficient and cost effective way possible.

The second week in October to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred on October 9, 1871. Over 250 people were killed in this fire, 100,000 were left homeless, and 17,400 structures were destroyed in one day. The first observance of this week was in 1922 when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it National Fire Prevention Week.
